Is a Leash Collar or Harness Better for Cats?
Collars can come off easily, and pulling on a collar with a lead could harm your cat's neck. For most cats, a harness and leash set is the ideal option due to the safety, control and comfort it offers. While a harness can evenly distribute pressure and prevent escapes, a cat will initially be triggered by a flight or fight response before they have acclimated up to it. However, cats that are already comfortable with a collar might find it easier to adapt to a leash attached to their collar.
Is it Okay to Leash Train a Cat?
While it may have once been out of the norm to see a cat on a leash, it’s becoming a more common practice. Many owners believe that it is a safe way to explore and give your furry pet some needed exercise to prevent boredom behaviours. To begin leash training your pet feline, one first needs to have the right gear.
Is it a Good Idea to Walk Your Cat on a Leash?
If you're worried your cat may go outside and not come back, or if you just want the companionship of your feline friend on a walk, then training your cat to walk on a leash may be a good solution. Not every cat will enjoy—or even tolerate—walking on a leash. Many cats will fall over or freeze when they feel the harness because it triggers a survival response they would use if grabbed by a predator. You need to help them move through this instinctual behaviour with a highly attractive toy or treat — and lots of praise.
