Gel mat or water mat,  which one should I get?

The right choice depends on how much cooling your dog needs and how much prep you want to do:

No prep, everyday use: the Always Cool Gel Mat activates on contact with no freezing or refrigerating required. It recharges on its own between uses. Good for dogs that want a cooler surface to lie on throughout the day.

Stronger cooling, planned use: the Arctic Water Mat (medium or large ) uses a 3-layer water system that you freeze beforehand. Noticeably colder than the gel mat, and better for dogs that run hot or come in after exercise.

For most dogs, the gel mat covers everyday comfort. The water mat is worth the extra spend if you have a large breed, a thick-coated dog, or one that pants heavily in summer.

What signs tell me my dog is actually too hot?

Heavy panting after minimal activity, seeking out tiled floors or shade and refusing to move, drooling more than usual, or acting lethargic when they'd normally be active. Flat-faced breeds (Bulldogs, Frenchies, Pugs) and thick-coated breeds (Huskies, Golden Retrievers, Bernese) hit their limit faster than others and benefit most from a mat year-round rather than just on extreme days.

If your dog is actively panting while lying on a cool floor, a mat is a practical upgrade from tiles alone, it stays cooler longer and doesn't warm up the way floor surfaces do.

Does a cooling mat work outdoors or only inside?

Both mats work outdoors, with one caveat: place them in shade. A mat sitting in direct sun will warm up faster than your dog can cool down on it, defeating the point entirely. In shade, both mats hold their temperature well.

The gel mat is the lighter and easier option to carry outside. If you're spending time outdoors in the heat, pairing a mat with the Chill Out Cooling Fan creates a proper cool zone. The fan moves air across the mat surface which amplifies the cooling effect. The Chill Out Silicone Water Bottle pairs well for keeping them hydrated at the same time.

Can I use it in a crate or car?

Yes on both. The gel mat fits well inside a crate, it lies flat, doesn't require any fixings, and the self-cooling action works in enclosed spaces. For car travel, lay it on the back seat or boot before long trips. The water mat is heavier and less portable, so the gel mat is the better crate and travel option. Neither mat should be left in a parked car in direct sun.

How do I clean and store it between uses?

Wipe the gel mat down with a damp cloth after use, it doesn't need a full wash every time. For a deeper clean, mild soap and water works fine, then air dry flat before storing.

The gel mat doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge between uses; it recharges at room temperature on its own. Store flat or loosely rolled rather than tightly folded to preserve the mat surface over time.

Store the Arctic Mat’s ice cube sheet in the freezer so it is ready when you need it.
